When I was 13yrs old we were living in England at the time while my dad worked at the Canadian Embassy.

It was 1989 when we first arrived in London England, and stayed at the Hilton Hotel.
At the time, my sister and I were 10 and 11yrs old. The next day we ate at a local pub (very common place for families to eat) and my sister and I ordered hamburgers. Our mouths dropped open in awe as we sat staring at our burgers with no tops on them. My parents asked the waiter for the top half of our buns. He thought we were strange but kindly gave it to us.
Over the next three years we tried many new foods and flavours.
We lived in Ealing, just down the road from Ealing Broadway Station where there was a place to get fish & chips (French fries). Hanging out with friends I would just order chips. They always came wrapped in newspaper that I would douse in salt, and malt vinegar, yum yum π.
Butter tarts are still one of my favourite desserts. At a Church Christmas gathering I picked up what I thought was one and gagged as the flavour was too strong. I had actually picked up a mincemeat tart. These are filled with a mix of dried fruits like raisins, currants, and apples, along with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. As an adult now I would really like to try them again.
Some of the other interesting things I tried were prawn cocktail crisps (bag of chips), Double Decker chocolate bar (with nougat), and Kendal Mint Cake (highly addictive mint bar marketed as an energy snack used on famous expeditions).
A few times we visited Cornwall in the south of England. Here they have Cornish Pasties and Scones with clotted cream & jam.
Cornish pasties are a traditional English pastry known for their distinctive D-shaped crust, which is crimped on the side. Typically, a Cornish pasty is filled with beef, potatoes, turnips (or rutabaga, as it's known in some places), and onions, and seasoned with salt and pepper). A great light meal if you are traveling around sight seeing.
Have you ever had the pleasure of trying a proper English scone with clotted cream? Each bite is a moment of pure, old-fashioned indulgence, best enjoyed with a hot cup of tea on a lazy afternoon. Itβs comfort food that feels like a warm hug. It is a buttery bread biscuit with fruit jam with a spread of thick cream on top. The cream topping has a texture somewhere between butter and whipped cream. If you love cream you won't be sorry you gave it a try.
One summer, way back in 1991, my mother took my little sister back to Canada for a visit, my father put me on a boat to France, and he went for a solo back packing trip around Ireland.
(He even wrote about it in a magazine,
so I guess I take after him in writing this blog ;)

While living with my new French family in Page des Rosaires, in Saint-Brieuc, France, I tried all kinds of interesting and tasty food.
Of course, being 13yrs old, my favourite was fried crepes in butter with Nutella and whip cream!. Good thing we lived just off the beach and walked a lot. They lived in Paris, and this was their summer home. I actually don't know their names, as my parents heard of them through a friend. Times were very different in the 1990's.
Living by the beach meant we would go out on a morning when the tide was out and look for food. We caught our own shrimp, crabs, snails, rabbit (the father must have caught it one day), mussels ( these I detest), and these white shells the family called coquille, that sounds like "cookie". To get these shells we would walk the beach that was still wet and look for tiny holes in the sand. When we found a hole we would stand on either side and walk on the spot causing pressure for the little white shell to pop up out of the sand.
The fifteen year old daughter, who was a little older and braver than me, would just open them up and suck out the insides right there on the beach.
I actually preferred snails over these. I never dreamed of eating snails, or as the French say escargot.
The mother was incredibly strong for having such a tiny build and I am guessing around five feet tall. Everywhere we went she carried this huge shoulder purse (about half her size) and carried around the families personal items, including mine.
One morning she showed me where she put all the snails we caught. She had them all in a huge covered pot for eight days to starve them (so we don't eat what's inside them). Then on the eighth day she boiled them and served them to us soaked in garlic butter, in this cute plate with about six indents that had three snails in each.
I literally counted each one so I forever knew I ate 18 snails that day!
So, as you can see, my love for food started early on.
We then moved to the Canadian Prairies!

I liked it here so much I kept moving back. It is where I live now. Manitoba & Saskatchewan is where I have tried my first farmer sausage & perogies, bison burger, poutine, and Saskatoon berry pie.
Of course there are many foods I like. One of my favourite desserts that I love to bake is baklava. I learned about 10yrs ago from watching a woman from Greece on YouTube. I make it with real butter, raw honey, and walnuts. It's delish.
One day my husband decided for health reasons he was going Vegan. That was a huge change not only to the way we ate, but also to my mind.
When your brain is trained that the main protein on your plate is beef, chicken, pork, fish, or eggs, it is crazy hard to come up with meals every single day without these and still be healthy and taste good.
PRO TIP: Do NOT tell anyone your food preferences UNTIL you have it down as a SOLID SYSTEM.
People are crazy opinionated when it comes to the food YOU eat. Friends, family, people at church, people at the grocery store...everyone will have input. Some will mock you. Some will avoid you. Let's just say it was so intense when we told others we were "plant based" I ended up gaining 30lbs going back to meat & dairy just to please everyone.
I do not want this for YOU, my dear reader who is taking your time to read my blog. By the way, thank you. I hope you are getting value out of it. I will later write a blog about our "plant based" adventures with tips and tricks. For now, we eat meat with a huge focus on vegetables & healthy grains.
