12 Great Home Renovation Ideas for Families that do life together.

Families that "do life" together. What do I mean by that?
Think of your average week day. If you were to cut out your sleeping time in a 24 hour day, how much of it would be "together" with your family? Do you eat together? School together? Pray together? Do sports or activities together? Not judging here. This is your day. Your life. Some families can not stand each other. I have had many mothers say to me "how can you homeschool? I can not stand being with my kids all day".
But what if the things you can't stand had nothing to do with your children?
What if it was your home and how it is organized?
Do you have areas where you can be together, and also areas where you can have calm & peace and rejuvenate?
Are there safe play areas where your children can explore and have imaginative play?
Are you doing all the cleanup and find it challenging to find homes for everything?
After homeschooling my children for the last 13yrs, in 6 different homes, I know a lot about creating spaces that are kid friendly and multi-functional.
When you have littles you may focus on childproofing and creating kid-friendly environments. As your family grows and your children have more interests, you might prioritize multi-functional spaces that accommodate the entire family's needs. And then there are the years of lessons, sports, and volunteering when moms often seek solutions that support an active, busy lifestyle with kids.

1. Kid-Friendly Home Designs:
Creating safe and fun spaces for children.
Creating safe and fun spaces for children at home is a wonderful idea! Here are three engaging spaces you can consider:
Reading Nook:

Set up a cozy corner with soft cushions, bean bags, and a variety of age-appropriate books. Adding some fun decorations like fairy lights or themed wall art can make this space extra inviting. It encourages reading and provides a quiet, relaxing area for children.
Art and Craft Station:

Designate a small area with a table, chairs, and storage for art supplies like crayons, markers, paper, and crafting materials. This space can stimulate creativity and provide a designated spot for messy art projects. Consider using easy-to-clean surfaces and child-safe scissors and glue.
Indoor Play Gym:

If you have enough space, an indoor play gym can be a fantastic addition. You can include elements like a small slide, climbing wall, monkey bars, or even a mini trampoline. Ensure all equipment is securely installed and has soft mats underneath for safety. When my children were 3yrs and 5yrs old we built them a climbing wall in one of their rooms. It was great for those winter days when we did not want to go outside.
These spaces will not only keep kids entertained but also nurture their creativity, imagination, and physical activity in a safe environment.

2. Storage Solutions for Toys:
Clever ways to store and organize children's toys.

Organizing children's toys can be a bit of a puzzle, but with a few clever strategies, you can keep everything tidy and easy to find. Here are some ideas:
Use Clear Bins: Clear plastic bins make it easy to see what's inside without having to open them. Label each bin with both pictures and words to help children know where things belong.
Storage Cubes: Fabric storage cubes are great for keeping toys organized and can be easily stored on shelves. They come in a variety of colors and designs, making them both functional and decorative. Save these when your children are out of the "toy stage" they are great for closet organizing or even the car for grocery bags in the trunk.
Toy Rotation: Keep only a few toys accessible at any given time and store the rest. Rotate the toys every few weeks to keep playtime fresh and exciting while reducing clutter. When your child is very small it is good to start blankets and toys on rotation, before they become a security blanket or toy. If your child has already become attached to a certain item, do not take the item away to cause distress. Try slowly putting it out of site, so the child can still find it. Maybe it is behind the couch and if the child really wants it you help look for it and reveal it saying "oh there it is". We once forgot my daughters soother at home when we went to camp. She was 2yrs old and screamed maybe 30 minutes while we looked. We then said to her "oh oh, we forgot it at home". To our surprise she gave us a look of shock, then was distracted by something else. A few days later when we got home we quickly found the soother and trashed it.
Under-Bed Storage: Utilize the space under the bed with rolling storage bins. This is a great place for less frequently used toys or larger items.
Hanging Organizers: Use over-the-door shoe organizers or hanging baskets to store smaller toys, art supplies, or plush animals. These are especially useful for maximizing vertical space.
Bookshelves with Bins: Incorporate bins into bookshelves to store toys. This allows for easy access and keeps toys off the floor while also encouraging reading.
Toy Chests and Benches: Toy chests or benches with built-in storage are perfect for keeping larger toys or stuffed animals. They also double as seating.
Pegboards: Install pegboards on the wall to hang toys, tools, or craft supplies. This keeps items off the floor and within easy reach. My daughter has one now in her room as a teen to organize her art and jewelry.
Rolling Carts: A rolling cart with multiple levels can hold a variety of toys and be easily moved from room to room. It's perfect for art supplies or building blocks. I have had so many rolling carts over the years. They get promoted and demoted to so many rooms - toys, crafts, Switch games and consoles, bathroom supplies, kitchen pantry for baking supplies...so many uses.
Magnetic Strips: Use magnetic strips to store metal toys like cars or to display magnetic art supplies. Attach the strip to a wall or the side of a shelf. FYI, my husband has a game he has played with the kids for years with a small lizard stuffie that had magnets in its paws. He places it high on the wall or ceiling for the kids to discover. Because in your walls there are many many metal screws that you can magnet too. Genius I know. You're welcome.
DIY Solutions: Get creative with DIY storage solutions. Repurpose old containers, build custom shelves, or create storage bags from fabric. Involving the kids in these projects can be a fun activity.
Bench with Storage: A bench with built-in storage can provide seating and a place to store toys. This works well in playrooms or entryways.
By implementing these ideas, you can create a more organized and functional space for your children's toys, making cleanup easier and playtime more enjoyable for everyone.
3. Open Floor Plans:
Designing open and airy living spaces.

Creating open and airy living spaces can make your home feel more spacious and inviting. Here are ten ways an open floor plan can be beneficial for families at home together:
Improved Social Interaction: Encourages more family time and interaction by keeping everyone in the same general area.
Enhanced Supervision: Easier for parents to keep an eye on children from different parts of the home.
Flexible Space: Offers versatile areas that can be adapted for various activities, such as playtime, studying, or entertaining guests.
Increased Natural Light: Allows natural light to flow through the space, creating a brighter and more cheerful environment.
Seamless Entertainment: Ideal for hosting gatherings, as it allows guests to mingle freely without barriers.
Better Use of Space: Eliminates unnecessary walls, making the home feel more spacious and reducing wasted areas.
Improved Traffic Flow: Reduces congestion by allowing easy movement between rooms.
Connection with Nature: Often integrates indoor and outdoor living spaces, providing a closer connection to nature.
Modern Aesthetic: Provides a clean, contemporary look that appeals to many families.
Enhanced Communication: Facilitates better communication among family members, promoting a more connected household.
An open floor plan can make a home more functional, enjoyable, and family-friendly.
4. Family-Friendly Kitchen Remodels:
Updating kitchens to accommodate busy families.

I love how this basement apartment kitchen was designed with a study desk in mind, as well as the ample shelving for extra storage. Tiny spaces can still have great lighting and workspaces.
Updating a kitchen to accommodate a busy family can make meal preparation more efficient and enjoyable. Here are some practical and stylish ideas:
Efficient Storage: Install plenty of cabinets and drawers, utilizing every inch of available space. Pull-out shelves, helpful Susan (as I like to call them), and drawer dividers can help keep everything organized and accessible. Consider adding a pantry or expanding an existing one.
Multi-Functional Island: A kitchen island can serve as a prep area, dining space, and storage unit. Include seating for quick meals and homework time, and add drawers or shelves for extra storage.
Open Layout: An open kitchen layout allows for better flow and communication. Removing barriers or walls between the kitchen and living areas can create a more spacious and inclusive environment.
High-Quality Appliances: Invest in reliable, energy-efficient appliances that can handle the demands of a busy family. Look for appliances with smart features, such as programmable ovens, slow cookers, and dishwashers with flexible loading options.
Easy-Clean Surfaces: Choose durable, easy-to-clean materials for countertops, backsplashes, and floors. Quartz or granite countertops, tile backsplashes, and vinyl or tile flooring can withstand spills and heavy use while being easy to maintain.
Family Command Center: Set up a designated area for organizing family schedules, meal plans, and grocery lists. A chalkboard or whiteboard, along with hooks for keys and a charging station for devices, can help keep everything in order.

Child-Friendly Features: Include features that make the kitchen safe and accessible for children. Soft-close drawers, rounded countertop edges, and lower cabinets for kids' dishes and snacks can make the kitchen more family-friendly.
Ample Lighting: Good lighting is essential for a functional kitchen. Combine ambient, task, and accent lighting to ensure the space is well-lit. Under-cabinet lighting and pendant lights over the island can enhance both functionality and aesthetics.
Personal Touches: Add personal touches that reflect your family's style and preferences. Decorative items, colorful dishware, and a family photo wall can make the kitchen feel warm and welcoming.
By incorporating these elements, you can create a kitchen that not only accommodates the demands of a busy family but also provides a comfortable and inviting space for everyone to enjoy.
5. Laundry Room Upgrades:
Making laundry day more efficient and organized.

Making your laundry room more efficient and organized can make a big difference in your daily routine. Here are some practical tips to help you achieve a functional and tidy space:
Maximize Vertical Space: Install shelves or cabinets above your washer and dryer to store detergent, fabric softener, and other laundry supplies. Use baskets or bins to keep everything organized and easily accessible.
Fold-Down Drying Rack: A fold-down drying rack saves space and provides a convenient spot to air-dry clothes. When not in use, it can be folded up against the wall.
Hanging Rod: Install a hanging rod for clothes that need to be air-dried on hangers or to keep freshly ironed clothes wrinkle-free. This also helps save space and keeps clothes organized.
Rolling Cart: A rolling cart with shelves can hold laundry supplies and be easily moved around. It can fit in tight spaces and keep items within reach.
Counter Space: If you have the room, add a countertop above the washer and dryer for folding clothes. It provides a convenient workspace and keeps the laundry area organized.
Sorters and Hampers: Use laundry sorters or hampers with multiple compartments to separate whites, colors, and delicates. This makes sorting laundry easier and more efficient.
Pegboard or Wall Hooks: Install a pegboard or wall hooks to hang frequently used items like ironing boards, lint rollers, and cleaning supplies. This keeps the space tidy and items within easy reach.
Label Everything: Label shelves, bins, and containers to ensure everything has a designated spot. This helps maintain organization and makes it easier for everyone in the household to find what they need.
Multi-Functional Furniture: Consider a bench with storage for laundry baskets or a cabinet with a built-in ironing board. Multi-functional furniture can save space and keep the area organized.
Lighting: Good lighting is essential in a laundry room. Ensure the space is well-lit with overhead lights and task lighting for specific areas, like above the countertop or near the ironing board.
Lint Bin: Keep a small trash bin or lint bin nearby to dispose of lint and small trash items easily. This helps maintain cleanliness and prevents clutter.
By implementing these tips, you can create an efficient and organized laundry room that makes the chore of doing laundry a bit more pleasant and manageable.

6. Creating Homework Stations:
Designing dedicated study areas for kids & teens.

Creating a dedicated study area for kids can help them focus, stay organized, and develop good study habits. Here are some tips to design an effective and inviting study space:
Choose the Right Location: Select a quiet spot in the house with minimal distractions. It could be a corner in their bedroom, a section of the living room, or even a designated study room if space allows.
Comfortable Seating: Invest in an ergonomic chair and a sturdy desk. The chair should provide good back support and be adjustable to fit your child's height. A comfortable workspace encourages longer, focused study sessions.
Good Lighting: Ensure the study area is well-lit with natural light during the day and adequate task lighting for evening hours. A desk lamp with adjustable brightness can be helpful for reading and writing.
Organized Workspace: Keep the study area tidy and clutter-free. Use shelves, drawers, or organizers to store books, supplies, and papers. Label storage containers to make it easy for kids to find and put away their materials.
Personal Touches: Allow your child to personalize their study area with decorations, photos, or artwork. This can make the space feel more inviting and enjoyable.
Functional Accessories: Include essential study accessories like a corkboard or whiteboard for notes and reminders, a calendar for tracking assignments, and a desk organizer for pens, pencils, and other supplies.
Technology Setup: If your child uses a computer or tablet for schoolwork, ensure the study area has a stable internet connection and a comfortable setup for screen time. Consider using screen stands to keep the monitor at eye level and reduce strain. These walk stations are pretty cool for teens or adults.
Noise Control: Use noise-canceling headphones or a white noise machine to minimize distractions from household sounds. This can help create a more focused study environment.
Break Area: If space allows, set up a small area with a comfortable chair or bean bag where your child can take short breaks. This helps prevent burnout and keeps them refreshed.
Positive Reinforcement: Create a positive and encouraging atmosphere by displaying motivational quotes or educational posters. This can inspire and motivate your child to stay focused and committed to their studies.
By designing a dedicated study area tailored to your child's needs and preferences, you can create a productive and enjoyable environment that supports their learning and growth.
7. Bathroom Renovations for Families:
Making bathrooms more functional for everyone.

Making a bathroom more functional for a large family involves optimizing space, ensuring efficiency, and creating an organized environment. Here are some strategies to achieve that:
Double Vanity: If space allows, install a double vanity to provide ample sink space for multiple users at once. This reduces morning bottlenecks and allows for a more streamlined routine.
Efficient Storage: Use wall-mounted shelves, cabinets, and over-the-toilet storage units to maximize vertical space. Baskets and bins can help keep toiletries and towels organized and easily accessible.
Separate Shower and Tub: If possible, having a separate shower and bathtub can allow multiple family members to use the bathroom simultaneously. Consider a walk-in shower with sliding doors to save space.
Hooks and Racks: Install plenty of hooks and towel racks for everyone to hang their towels and bathrobes. Label each hook or use color-coded towels for each family member to avoid mix-ups.
Laundry Hampers: Place laundry hampers in the bathroom to keep dirty clothes off the floor. Having separate hampers for lights and darks can also make laundry sorting easier.
Kid-Friendly Features: Include step stools for younger children to reach the sink and adjust the height of mirrors and towel racks accordingly. Consider installing non-slip mats and child-safe faucets.
Organized Shower Caddies: Use shower caddies or built-in niches to keep shampoo, conditioner, and body wash organized and within reach. This reduces clutter and keeps the shower area tidy.
Mirror Storage: Mirrors with built-in storage or medicine cabinets behind them can save space and provide extra storage for small items like toothbrushes, razors, and medications.
Timed Fans and Heaters: Install timers on exhaust fans and heaters to ensure proper ventilation and warmth without wasting energy. This can also help prevent moisture build-up and mold.
Multipurpose Furniture: Consider using furniture that doubles as storage, like a bench with hidden compartments. This can provide seating while also keeping bathroom essentials organized.
Efficient Lighting: Ensure the bathroom is well-lit with a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. LED lights are energy-efficient and long-lasting, making them a great choice.
Color-Coded Organization: Use color-coded bins, baskets, and towels for each family member to keep personal items separate and organized. This makes it easier for everyone to find their belongings.
By implementing these ideas, you can create a bathroom that accommodates the needs of a large family, making daily routines smoother and more efficient.
8. Multi-Functional Living Rooms:
Designing spaces that work for the whole family.

Designing a living room that caters to the needs of the whole family involves balancing style, comfort, and functionality. Here are some tips to create a space everyone will love:
Flexible Seating: Choose a variety of seating options like sofas, armchairs, ottomans, and floor cushions. This ensures there's a comfortable spot for everyone and provides flexibility for different activities.
Durable Furniture: Opt for furniture made from durable, easy-to-clean materials. Consider stain-resistant fabrics and scratch-resistant surfaces to withstand daily wear and tear.
Storage Solutions: Incorporate storage solutions like built-in shelves, cabinets, and storage ottomans to keep toys, games, and other items organized. This helps maintain a clutter-free space.
Multi-Functional Furniture: Use furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a coffee table with storage, a sofa bed for guests, or a media console with drawers. This maximizes functionality without compromising on style.
Zoning: Create different zones within the living room for various activities. For example, have a reading nook with a comfortable chair and bookshelf, a play area with a rug and toy storage, and a media area with a TV and gaming setup.
Kid-Friendly Elements: Include elements that make the space safe and inviting for children. Use soft rugs, rounded furniture edges, and secure heavy items to the wall. Provide low tables and chairs for kids' activities.
Personal Touches: Add personal touches that reflect your family's personality. Display family photos, artwork, and souvenirs from trips to make the space feel uniquely yours.
Easy Maintenance: Choose easy-to-maintain flooring like hardwood, laminate, or tile with area rugs for comfort. These materials are durable and simple to clean, making them ideal for high-traffic areas.
Adequate Lighting: Ensure the living room is well-lit with a mix of natural light, overhead lighting, and task lighting. Use lamps and sconces to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Tech Integration: Integrate technology seamlessly into the living room. Use cable management solutions to hide wires, and consider a media console that accommodates all your devices neatly.
Comfort and Coziness: Add cozy elements like throw blankets, cushions, and a fireplace if possible. These make the space more inviting and comfortable for the whole family to relax and enjoy.
Open Layout: If possible, maintain an open layout to encourage family interaction and make the space feel larger. An open-plan living room can also facilitate supervision of children while they play.
By incorporating these tips, you can create a living room that is stylish, practical, and welcoming for every member of the family.
9. Space-Saving Furniture:
Finding furniture that maximizes space.

Space-saving furniture can be a game-changer for multi-functional families, helping to maximize space and functionality. Here are some innovative ideas:
Murphy Beds: Murphy beds can fold up into the wall when not in use, freeing up floor space for other activities during the day. Some models even come with built-in shelving or desks.
Sofa Beds and Futons: These versatile pieces can function as a sofa during the day and a bed at night. They're perfect for accommodating guests or creating a dual-purpose living room.
Convertible Tables: Dining tables that can be expanded or collapsed are ideal for saving space. Some models can be used as a small table for everyday meals and extended for larger gatherings.
Storage Ottomans: Ottomans with hidden storage can serve as extra seating, a footrest, or a coffee table while providing a place to stash blankets, toys, or other items.
Wall-Mounted Desks: Wall-mounted desks can be folded up when not in use, saving space in home offices or study areas. They often come with built-in shelves for added storage.
Stackable Chairs and Stools: Stackable chairs and stools can be easily stored away when not needed, freeing up space in dining rooms or play areas.
Loft Beds: Loft beds elevate the sleeping area, creating additional space underneath for a desk, seating area, or storage. They are great for kids' rooms or small apartments.
Modular Furniture: Modular furniture pieces can be reconfigured to suit different needs. For example, modular sofas can be rearranged to fit various room layouts, and modular shelving can adapt to changing storage requirements.
Under-Bed Storage: Beds with built-in drawers or storage compartments underneath provide a great solution for stashing clothes, shoes, or linens without taking up additional space.
Foldable and Nesting Tables: Foldable tables can be tucked away when not in use, and nesting tables can be stacked together to save space but easily separated when additional surfaces are needed.
Multi-Functional Cribs: Convertible cribs can transform into toddler beds, daybeds, or even full-sized beds as your child grows, making them a long-lasting and space-saving investment.
Built-In Storage: Custom built-in furniture, like benches with storage, bookcases with cabinets, or window seats with drawers, can utilize every inch of space efficiently.
These space-saving furniture solutions can help you create a more organized, functional, and comfortable living environment for your multi-functional family.

10. Custom Closet Designs:
Organizing closets to meet family needs.

Organizing closets for a homeschool family requires a balance of accessibility, functionality, and efficient use of space. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Categorize Items: Group items by category, such as school supplies, books, art materials, and educational games. This helps you know exactly where everything is and makes retrieval easier.
Adjustable Shelving: Install adjustable shelves to accommodate items of varying heights. This flexibility allows you to reorganize and make the best use of vertical space as your storage needs change.
Clear Storage Bins: Use clear plastic bins with labels to store smaller items like markers, glue sticks, and craft supplies. Clear bins make it easy to see what's inside without opening them.
Hanging Organizers: Utilize hanging organizers on closet doors for storing frequently used items. Pocket organizers can hold small supplies, while larger ones can store books or folders.
Rolling Carts: Invest in rolling storage carts that can be moved in and out of the closet as needed. These are great for art supplies, science kits, or other materials that are often used during homeschooling sessions.
Hooks and Pegboards: Install hooks or a pegboard inside the closet to hang items like backpacks, bags, or other frequently used supplies. This keeps things off the floor and easy to access.
Dedicated Zones: Create dedicated zones within the closet for different activities. For example, have a section for reading materials, a section for arts and crafts, and a section for science projects.
Label Everything: Clearly label shelves, bins, and drawers to ensure that everyone knows where items belong. This helps maintain organization and makes it easier for children to find and put away their supplies.
File Storage: Use file boxes or magazine holders to store workbooks, lesson plans, and other documents. This keeps papers organized and prevents them from getting lost or damaged.
Seasonal Rotation: Rotate materials and supplies based on the school year or season. Store less frequently used items or seasonal projects in higher, less accessible areas, and keep current items within easy reach.
Personalization: Allow each child to have their own section or bin for personal items and projects. This fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for keeping their area organized.
By implementing these strategies, you can create a well-organized and functional closet that meets the needs of your homeschooling family. Happy organizing!

12. Outdoor Living Spaces:
Creating areas for family gathering outside.

Creating inviting outdoor areas for your family can be a relaxing way to enjoy the fresh air and natural surroundings. Here are some ideas to help you design a functional and cozy outdoor space:
Dining Set: Invest in a durable outdoor dining set that fits your family's needs. Whether it's a large table with chairs or a picnic-style setup, choose materials like weather-resistant wood, metal, or rattan that can withstand the elements.
Shade Options: Provide shade to keep everyone comfortable, especially during hot days. Options include umbrellas, pergolas with retractable canopies, shade sails, or even a gazebo. These can also add a touch of style to the space. Pro Tip: choose carefully where you set up your sitting area. We built our gazebo down near our property line because there were shaded trees. We did not anticipate our neighbors going near the fence to smoke pot for medicinal reasons. 😱
Lighting: Ensure your outdoor dining area is well-lit for evening meals. String lights, lanterns, and solar-powered pathway lights can create a warm and inviting ambiance. Consider adding a chandelier or pendant light above the dining table for a focal point.
Planters and Gardens: Build raised beds or ground garden and fill with flowers, herbs, or small shrubs. This adds natural beauty and a sense of intimacy. Some herbs can even be used in your cooking, adding freshness to your meals. We tend to build raised beds not long after we move in so they are ready for the next year.
Fire Pit or Heater: Extend the usability of your outdoor dining area into cooler months with a fire pit or outdoor heater. This provides warmth and a cozy atmosphere for family gatherings.
Storage Solutions: Consider having storage nearby for outdoor essentials like cushions, tableware, and barbecue tools. A storage bench or deck box can keep items organized and protected from the weather.
Cooking Area: If you enjoy cooking outdoors, set up a grilling or cooking station nearby. A portable grill, prep table, and a small outdoor kitchen setup can make it convenient to prepare and serve meals.
Comfortable Seating: Choose comfortable seating options with weather-resistant cushions. Benches, cushioned chairs, or even outdoor sofas can make the space more inviting and comfortable for longer meals and conversations.
Entertainment: Add entertainment options like a Bluetooth speaker for music, a projector for outdoor movie nights, or garden games to keep everyone entertained before and after meals.
By incorporating these elements, you can create an outdoor dining area that's perfect for family meals, gatherings, and making lasting memories.
